Design Dos and Don’ts; Flooring
When it comes to designing your dream home (or updating a tired one), flooring is one of the most important investments you'll make. In New Zealand, where climate, lifestyle, and design trends all play a part, choosing the right tiles and flooring isn’t just about what looks good — it’s about what works. Here’s our list of flooring do’s and don’ts to help you nail your next project.
DO... Mix Function With Style
Tiles in New Zealand homes are often used in high-traffic or splash-prone areas — think kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms and entryways. Whilst traditional square and rectangular tiles are most popular, there are actually few limitations for flooring, so long as tiles are 'porcelain'. Think patterned encaustic tiles to add character or consider wood-look tiles for the beauty of timber with the durability of tile.
DON’T... Overdo Trends
While trends come and go, overcommitting to a trend can date your home quickly and be costly in the long-run. Flooring isn’t something you want to replace every few years so opting for trendy tiles in small doses such as feature walls, splashbacks, or small-format areas is a good option. Be brave and as original as you like in your home because our decorative tiles can make a real impact without overpowering.
DO...Think About Flow from Inside to External Spaces
- In open-plan homes, consistent flooring helps create a seamless flow from one area to another. This is especially important in New Zealand homes where indoor-outdoor living is a big part of the lifestyle.
- Choosing your indoor flooring to match that of exterior areas can visually expand your home. Matching tiles indoors and out creates an open living space that will capture the natural freedom of the outdoors allowing enjoyment of sun and fresh air.
- New tile-finish technology has recently become available in NZ known as ‘In/Out’. IN/OUT tiles feel and look matt when dry, and with the unique manufacturing process, turns them slip resistent when wet. These ranges are perfect for a seamless indoor/outdoor flow – check them out here.
TIP: Choose tiles that work both inside and out for decks and patios. Many NZ tile suppliers offer ranges with matching exterior-rated tiles for a cohesive look.
DON’T... Forget About Slip Ratings!
This one’s more than just aesthetic — it’s about safety. Especially in bathrooms, wet areas, and outdoor spaces, always check the slip rating of your tiles. Choose wisely and if in doubt, speak to your local store design consultants who will ensure you get the best fit-for-purpose product for your project.
DO... Prioritise Sustainability
- Prioritise Sustainability. With growing awareness of sustainable building in NZ, consider flooring options that are low in VOCs.
- Tiles are a sustainable choice for flooring because they are made from natural materials like clay and sand, which are abundant and renewable. Most tiles are also manufactured using energy-efficient processes that minimise waste and reduce environmental impact.
- Additionally, tiles have a long lifespan, which means they don't need to be replaced frequently, reducing the amount of waste generated.
DON'T... Prioritise Aesthetics Over Environmental Impact, or ignore VOC's and Maintenance Requirements
- Consideration of our environment and sustainable products is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. Choosing flooring solely for looks can mean high environmental costs, depending on product choice. Always examine material make-up, carbon footprint, recyclability and renewalability.
- Many flooring materials and adhesives release volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). The production of tile does not include the use of toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process. Alternatively, products such as vinyl where a main ingredient is petroleum, can emit various levels of toxic VOC’s which are harmful to the air quality of the immediate environment and can cause respiratory problems over time.
- Some flooring types need harsh chemicals or lots of water to clean. Alternatively, tiles are easy to clean and maintain. Latest technological developments in easy-clean grouts also mean tiles are one of the most easy-care flooring solutions available
- Another consideration that is often overlooked is the likely maintenance ahead once flooring is completed! Unlike many flooring options on the market, tile does not need re-surfacing nor replacing due to aging and can last 50 years plus. They are more likely to be replaced due to personal taste as opposed to base product damage.
DO... Consider the Climate
- New Zealand’s climate varies widely from region to region. In the far north, you might be dealing with humidity, while down south, frosty winters call for warmth underfoot.
- The benefit of tiled floors that most are unaware of is the thermal mass only tiles can produce in homes! Thermal mass works by using a simple principle of physics: heat moves from warmer surfaces to cooler surfaces. Properly designed thermal mass such as installing tiles on floors absorb heat during the day then, as the air temperature drops, the heat moves from the tiles to the cooler air in evenings.
- In very cool areas, an excellent consideration is underfloor heating, one of the most efficient and cost-effective methods to heat a home. Our DEVI underfloor heating system ensures heat is evenly distributed and rises from below, recreating the ideal vertical temperature gradient.
- In humid regions, tiles are an ideal flooring option as they won’t warp, hold moisture or fade with direct sunlight.
DON’T... Ignore Your Home’s Natural Light
Dark flooring can make a space feel moody and grounded — but in a small or dim room, it can close things in. Conversely, very light floors might feel washed out in a bright, north-facing room. If you're unsure, visit our stores for trained design specialists and get the right look for your home.
