What is a 'Reactive Glaze' Finish?

A new term that has appeared recently in 'tile speak' is "Reactive Glaze". Reactive glazes are those seen on tiles that are mottled or variegated and thus do not have a homogeneous colour or character. The glazes are made from various minerals and oxides such as rutile, zircon and tin oxide that react with the clay body producing variations in texture and colour. These result in a stunning and beautiful finish enabling home owners and commercial specifiers to create an original design and look on any wall.

Another production technique similar to reactive glaze is called “Sinking”. Sinking is achived when factories use a special polished glaze and multiple colours in porcelain floor tiles to create the rivulets and 3D textures that add a shiny effect in the veining. This creates a more realistic stone-like appearance and an effect that brings the tiles to life. They take on a mind of their own creating a vibrant space to be envious of.
