Langlands Hotel, Invercargill

An important aspect of the brief was the ability for the hotel to enhance the urban environment of the central downtown area, engaging with the street and corner in a positive way, while being inviting for visitors and residents of the city.

The resulting design reflects the historical urban development pattern and grain by proposing three distinct structures which are connected by glazed bridges, creating interesting spaces between them. Double height, highly permeable ground floor spaces enhance engagement at street level, while upper parts of the building reference rhythm and pattern of the existing historic building fabric. The taller structure to the corner of Dee and Don streets provides an anchor, new contemporary landmark in the cityscape and creates a counterpoint to the ten-storey State Insurance building within the city block.
